The Ullambana (“deliverance from suffering”) Ceremony will be held by CYM at the Great Buddha Hall on August 18th, 2013 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.
The Ullambana Sutra (佛說報恩奉盆經) is a Mahayana sutra which consists in a brief discourse given by the Gautama Buddha principally to the monk Maudgalyayana on the practice of filial piety.
In the Ullambana Sutra, the Buddha instructs his disciple Mahāmaudgalyāyana on how to obtain liberation for his mother, who had been reborn into a lower realm, by making food offerings to the sangha on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. This practice is the basis of the ceremony in honor of one’s ancestors.
We cordially invite you to set up red longevity tablets and yellow memorial tablets (offer prayers) to receive blessings and to deliver the deceased from suffering, make donations to the nuns and monks, and to sponsor vegetarian meals for fellow participants. The merits accrued from these acts of piety and devotion will be dedicated to the donor’s parents of this life and those of the previous seven lives to repay their parental kindness.
