“The Buddhist Analysis of Mind”

A Study Retreat in the Abhidhamma, with Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi

The Abhidhamma, the Buddhist system of philosophical psychology, shines a bright spotlight on the nature of the mind to reveal the source of our afflictions, our positive potentials, and the higher states of consciousness of which we are capable. The primary work for the study of the Abhidhamma in the Southern Buddhist tradition has been a little manual in the Pali language called the Abhidhammattha Sangaha (“A Summary of the Subjects of the Abhidhamma”). In this retreat, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi will explore the first two chapters of this work, based on his English-language edition, A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma. These chapters deal with mind and mental factors. Through lectures, discussion, and meditation, we will look at the Abhidhamma, not as a dry system of numerical lists, but as an exploration of the nature of the mind that aims to promote progress on the Buddhist path and the attainment of liberation.
