In this talk, artist and experimental filmmaker Eva Lee will share experiences from her 2013 Fulbright research on 10th-12th century Buddhist mandalas in ancient Tibetan monasteries of Spiti, Lahaul, and Ladakh. Her presentation will include incredible photos of her Himalayan journey, along with a video of the astonishing interior of Tabo Monastery’s main temple, the famed Tsug Lhakhang. Also shown will be examples of contemporary mandalas, with discussion on their aesthetic structure and sacred purpose, including a four-minute time lapse video of the creation and dissolution of a Compassion Sand Mandala by Drepung Gomang monks from Southern India. The artist will also screen her latest experimental films—an abstract work of five minutes and another one of six minutes–to show how her research and experience with Buddhist philosophy inspires her animations. Don’t miss her mesmerizing animations as well as her documentaries, as she presents her latest work at Chuang Yen Monastery, Sunday, April 27th, 2:00pm, 2020 Rte 301, Carmel, NY 10512
Eva Lee is a visual artist and experimental filmmaker. Trained as a painter, her interest in the nature of mind has led her to study Buddhist philosophy, and to follow new developments in neuroscience of the brain. Her current works are informed by both Eastern philosophical and Western scientific views of consciousness. Her Fulbright research project on 10th-12th century C.E. Indo-Tibetan Mandalas examines some of the roots of Buddhist visual culture in the Himalayas in order to document, create new work, and share the continued relevance of mandalas for meditation practice and mind training.
She has exhibited at galleries and museums nationally, including The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, DeCordova Museum, Lights on Tampa, and Bronx Museum for the Arts. Her animations have screened internationally at venues such as BBC Big Screen, MashRome, and Streaming Festival.
