Reading sutras/suttas:
Sutra/sutta number one: The Discourse on the Establishment of Mindfulness (Smṛti-upasthāna sutra (四念處經) in Chineseand Satipaṭṭhanasutta in Pāli) – the way to purification of beings and overcoming grief and sorrow.
The first sutra/sutta (Buddhist texts) we are reading is focused on ‘The Four Establishments of Mindfulness (smṛtiupasthāna/satipa)’in which gives the full-fledge picture of what one practice will lead to enlightenment in a bigger scale system. Attention will not only be paid to the Chinese versions most influenced by Sarvāstivāda, but also Pāliparallel of both Śrāvakayāna. Commentarial perspectiveswill be discussed in the same manner not limiting toTheravādin sources but including Mahayāna masters’ as well. The goal of the classes is to present all ways of interpretation from classic materials, possibly with a good understanding of each tradition by ways of their interpretation. We welcome people who accept comparative studies, hermeneutical studies, and scholarly studies to attend the classes. However, the classes are not limited to practice/meditation. The aim is to provide the attendants with equal right of all-around understanding and well information from the rich resources of ancient and authenticBuddhist texts (e.g. the earliest Buddhist texts).
p/s texts will be provided in the class room.
