Entrance to Meditation Practices in Northern Buddhism
Chuang Yen Monastery proudly invites the world-renowned meditation master Venerable (Thomas Peter Gutmann) to lead a meditation retreat.
Meditation Practices in Northern Buddhism
Ven. Dhammadipa will introduce meditation on mindfulness of breath, anapanasmrti in accordance with the Northern tradition of Buddhism. In this tradition the practice of shamatha or appeasement meditation can be combined with insight, vipashyana meditation on the base of the Yogacara, or Mere consciousness understanding of the practice.
This teaching can be linked to the Indian tradition of yoga, which pays special attention to understanding of the subtle pranic body, which is inseparable from mind.
In this tradition the mind in the state of samadhi becomes the main object of both shamatha and vipashyana. In samadhi both shamatha and vipashyana start forming one reality, the reality of mind. Taking this reality as the only existing reality is the base for Yogacara practice.
In this tradition it is the royal path to realisation, the royal path to the Bodhisattva practice, leading to the state of Buddhahood, since both liberation and bondage are mental states.
In this course I shall teach some basic principles on meditation as explained in the five books of Buddha Maitreya, especially in the Yogacarabhumishastra and combine them with practical instruction, especially for the study of pranic body as support for the combined practice of shamatha and vipashyana.
